FIFA 2010 World Cup
June and July 2010, South Africa and Soccer! What a combination! The FIFA 2010 World Cup soccer tournament was hosted for the first time on African soil. South Africa showed the world the post-apartheid dream and the testimony and realization of Nelson Mandela's work first hand.
32 countries competing to win the title of soccer World Champions brought about a frenzy in South Africa and globally. Investments were made in infrastructure with roads, bridges, stadiums, lodging, communications, travel and entertainment being the countries top priorities. A huge priority of the South African government was the safety of the hundred of thousand of visitors, which was accomplished with a complete moratorium placed by President Zuma to cease all forms of violence in the country during the period of the World Cup.
And what a success it was! For those that attended in person, it will be a World Cup to remember forever. For those that watched on television, it was truly a historic moment and the yearning to actually be there to experience the event, was clearly felt. Nelson Mandela also appeared in person at the games. The final score was 1-0 to Spain over the Netherlands in a gruelling match in extra time.
