Athol Moult on his Inspiration for the 'Africa Salutes You' Artwork Collection
Athol Moult brings to the world this collaborative artmaking project, "Africa Salutes You". In his own words:
"Overlooking the Mbashe River in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, Mvezo Khomkulu is a wide landscape, strewn with rondavels (small African huts) painted in simple patterns of bright colors. Negotiating the bumps, dongas (long narrow valleys with steep sides) and Nguni cattle, I was on my way to Mvezo. Chief Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela had commissioned a series of artworks to commemorate the year '2010' in an initiative to raise funding for the development of infrastructure in Mvezo.
The rythms of life in this simple, beautiful place resonate with happiness and color, from the ritual of carrying water in barrels, strung either side of a swaying donkey, to children play-racing the latest models of cars fashioned from wire, tin cans and bottle caps. Amongst the hap hazard array of settlements and animals, strong graphic shapes and patterns emerge.
Parallel furrows in deep brown soil; tall spikes of bright green maize alternating with heavy round heads of coppery colored sorghum(a plant that produces grain); cattle, handsome in black and white symetrically patterned hides - a wealth of inspiration for a story of celebration and victory."
